City in Bloom

Each year before the thick air of summer descends on the city, a chorus of 35,000 Cherry Blossoms bloom, lighting up the city, and littering the streets with a blanket of pink and white pedals. This short and vibrant explosion of life reflects the Buddhist idea of appreciation for the fleeting beauty of a moment. Acting as a punctual reminder to all city inhabitants that the long, dark days of winter are behind, and sun-filled days of summer are ahead.

Below is a collection of Cherry Blossoms in one small corner of Brooklyn.

** Representing beauty, hope, and togetherness, New York City’s Cherry Blossoms were originally a gift from the Japanese government to the city in 1909.
